“During my time training with Doug as a private vocal student, he completely transformed my voice. My understanding of breath and abdominal support as being the core foundation in the physical act of singing is owed entirely to Doug. In our time my range and power as a vocalist grew exponentially. He aided me in developing exceptional support in my lower register, as well as helped me sing through my passaggio for the first time, enabling my high register to flourish free of strain or tension.

In addition to technical skill in the realm of teaching vocal production, Doug also encouraged and expected me to approach every piece of musical text with an actor’s eye first. He implored that any vocal choice we make as musical theatre performers must support the goal our character is pursuing in the moment and story we are embodying. And, much to my chagrin as a lover of ultra-high pop belting, Doug always made sure any vocal choice that “showed-off” was also entirely justified in the pursuit of the objective; otherwise, we get into indulgence. It all comes back to story and the embodiment thereof.

I always felt seen and cared for by Doug as an instructor and that he was more interested in helping me best develop the voice I already possessed rather than attempt to force me into any particular box. Frankly, he often acted as a de facto career coach during our time working together, as well as being a constant cheerleader of mine when I felt I wasn’t cut out for this business.

Unwavering kindness, incredible skill, and constant encouragement are three of the qualities Doug imbued in every moment we spent working together.”
