Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and experience do you have as a voice teacher?

I have a Bachelors(UNLV) and Masters(UCLA) in Voice and I am on track for my Doctorate in Spring 2024. I’ve also made my living singing and teaching singing for 22 years since I was 16 spanning a career from singing gondolier to Broadway star. Most of my life and energy has been devoted to understanding these art forms and how to teach them, and I am so excited to share that with you!

How long have you been teaching voice lessons?

20 Years! I’m getting up there and I started teaching in college because I’ve always loved teaching.

What age groups do you teach?

I mostly teach adults 18+. Many of my clients are emerging professionals(18-38), but a growing number of my favorites are older amateurs. Occasionally, I work with a younger singer with their parents sitting in at the lessons.

What styles of singing do you specialize in?

I think I do represent a strong crossover teacher where I can teach you to croon a jazz tune, sing an opera aria, or belt a Broadway tune. I grew up in a country music household where we loved Bing Crosby as much as Garth Brooks. I studied classical music in all its forms in college, but also have significant work experience, formal and informal education as well as teaching experience in broadway, pop, rock, jazz, and classical styles.

What can I expect during a typical voice lesson?

We often start by making a cup of tea and talking about vocal discoveries and issues since our last lesson.  We talk about your goals for our current lesson, and make a plan for whatever you’d like. We then usually spend 5-25 min warming up and working technical exercises to improve range, flexibility, ease, power, ect.

How long is each voice lesson?

A hour-ish. I try to start wrapping things up around 50-55 mins, but lessons do sometimes stretch over the booked hour and that’s not a problem if both our schedules allow.

Do you offer group lessons?

I offer masterclasses to groups on voice technique as well as an “Acting 101” that can fit into 1 hour up to a 32 hour course. Let’s talk if you’re interested! I also teach Musical Theatre Workshop at UNLV in the Fall and Spring.

What is your teaching approach or methodology?

All of them. My background is strongly academic and I continue to research all my interests in singing and acting. I love what I’ve learned from Estill Technique for fold closure concepts as well as old italian breath support(resistance!) techniques from my bel canto teachers. Most of all, I use my highly developed senses to feel and hear where you are in your process and make specific (and occasionally not so specific!) suggestions that will help you make tangible development in your vocal quality.

Can you help me improve my vocal range and control?

Probably.  I can’t guarantee anything, but I have helped a lot of people improve their range and control dramatically. I love exploring how expressive the voice can be!

How often should I take voice lessons?

I think you might try twice a week if you were in a hurry to get results, and had unlimited resources. That would have been my dream growing up and in college. However the average is weekly or even monthly.  Singing can absorb your entire life as it has mine 🙂… OR  it can be a hobby where you take a few lessons just to get a little more enjoyment out of something you love to do or would love to do more of! A few lessons go a long way in my experience.

Do you provide performance opportunities for your students?

I do occasionally host events, or recommend my students for performances at varying levels including paid professional opportunities. I love helping my students make a plan to create more performance opportunities.

Can you assist with audition preparation?

Yes. This is one of my fortes. College, High School, Broadway, competition… you name it I will help you get prepared. Auditions are a game I love to coach.

What materials or resources do I need for voice lessons?

You will need a book or ipad to keep music that you are working on. Something to take notes, and something to record our lessons so you can listen back later. Phones tend to work great.

Do you offer online voice lessons?

Yep. I teach over Zoom when necessary, but love being in the presence of my singers best.

What is your cancellation policy?

All sales are final. I do have a 24hr rescheduling policy. Feel free to use the confirmation email to reschedule our appointment up to 24hrs beforehand.

What are your rates for voice lessons?

$100-$80.  First 10 lessons $100. Second 10 $90.  After 20 lessons, students get my lowest rate, currently $80.  My rates reward students who keep at it and also recognizes that teaching and learning gets easier over our time together.

Do you offer package deals or discounts for multiple lessons?

Not currently.

How do I schedule a voice lesson with you?

Book a free 15 min consultation through this website. If we are a good fit(most are!), I will give you a booking link to my calendar.

I have allergies… Do you have pets?

Yes, I have 2 small dogs(Zara and Des) who sit upstairs during lessons, and who are mostly well behaved.  We can work at another venue if necessary.

Where do you teach?

I teach out of my beautiful home studio on the SW part of town around Jones and Warm Springs. I have a grand piano as well a wide assortment of other instruments, music books, microphones, speakers, and tools we can use to play and learn skills.

Are you an Acting teacher too?

Yes!  I teach acting techniques and can coach you on monologues, scenes, and any other theatre material. I have lots of training in Meisner, Stanislavski, Alexander technique and my Doctoral research is in Acting pedagogy. I find that acting is an integral part of singing and performing no matter what you do so we talk about it in voice lessons regardless.
